About the Author: Yoanna Abu Rahmeh
Yoanna Abu Rahmeh has been a kindergarten teacher for 22 years at the Ahliyyah School for Girls kindergarten in Amman. Working with children in an integrated programme inspired her to write these songs that helped children learn concepts, language in a fun way through music. She was encouraged to publish my songs when she competed in a regional competition with very famours poets and musicians writing for children. She won third place and besides winning her songs were sung and enjoyed by lots of children from many other schools in the Kingdom. Most private schools in Amman use her books as curriculum for their students since the songs comply with most themes that are given to children in K4, K5 up to third grade.
Music teacher Yoanna Abu Rahmeh got creative when there were no songs for her students to sin gin Arabic, “the children were singing nice English songs but the Arabic songs were old and boring.”
One day she started singing an English tune she learned as a child. She replaced English lyrics with Arabic ones and her students loved it. Yoanna’s originality emerged when she began composing songs and writing lyrics that children could understand - 100 songs so far to be exact. She composed her first song while cooking. “the trees were really moving; it was autumn. I began thinking in Arabic: “Tree of our garden, sad and crying, our grandsons ask, shy is it like this?” This song has become a classic in Jordan just like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.”
Creating an integrated curriculum, Yoannna incorporates vocabulary and concepts that students learn in other subjects for every song, she has a large illustrated book and flash cards. “ Kids who learn music find science and math easier to grasp. Plus, learning music opens up the mind like nothing else. It encourages creativity while instilling self disciple.
Yoanna’s own love for music came from her father who’d always sing to her. Although they didn’t have much money, he rented a piano so she and her siblings could play. “music allows all your anguish, anger and even your positive emotions to come out,” she says.
